911 Communication Center

Communications CenterThe Sumter City/County 911 Communicion Center dispatches emergency services for Sumter City Police, Sumter County Sheriff Department, Sumter City/County Fire, and Sumter EMS. After hours they dispatch all public services such as water, sewer and mechanical. The 911 Center is an enhanced center with twelve 911 lines coming into the Center displaying the telephone callers phone number and location. A trained staff of (22) twenty-two full time operators and (8) part-time operators answers emergency calls. The 911 Operators work a 12- hour shift with at least 5 operators on duty at any time. These operators dispatch over (10,000) ten thousand calls for service each month, emergency and non-emergency. Sumter 911 operators receive enormous amounts of training during their first year of employment. A Sumter operator is required to attend and successfully pass training in Emergency Medical Dispatch, Enhanced 911 Operating Procedures through the SC Criminal Justice Academy, computer training through SLED for work associated with the (NCIC) National Crime Information Center, and on the job training with a trainer which lasts approximately 12 weeks. Anyone interested in a career in 911 Communications should contact Lt. Nesbitt, Recruitment with the Sumter City Police Department.
