What is the policy for extending a permit?
All requests for extension must be made in writing at least five (5) working days before the permit application or issued permit is to expire and must be on the Sumter City-County Building Departments' "Request for Extension" form.
COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL PERMITS:
1. There will be no charge to extend a permit application or an active permit (one that has not expired due to lack of activity for 180 days) if a request for extension is submitted in writing and a justifiable cause is demonstrated to the satisfaction of the building official.
2. The extension(s) shall be for not more than 180 days each.
3. The total number of extensions issued shall be at the discretion of the building official.
What is the policy for expired permits?
COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL PERMITS:
1. If it has been more than 180 days since the permit was applied for or more than 180 days since a permit was issued and there has been no activity and a written request for extension or a written request for refund has not been applied for and granted, the permit application is considered abandoned or an issued permit is considered expired.
2. An expired permit can not be extended nor can a refund be issued once a permit has expired.
3. A new permit must be applied for and new permit application fees paid if a new permit is to be issued for any reason.
4. If there have been any code changes enacted between the expiration of the previous permit and the application for a new permit, the new code changes shall govern the new permit.
