FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 13, 2009

Palmetto Park is slowing down.  On May 1st, 2009 the speed limit will change from 25 miles per hour to 15 miles per hour.  The City of Sumter officials decided after careful consideration and a traffic study conducted by the Sumter Police Department Traffic Unit, it was in the best interest of those utilizing the park to say yes…it is time to slow down

Parents with children of all ages are enjoying the park and the facilities located inside Palmetto Park and need to feel they are safe from the traffic traveling at speeds much higher than what is currently posted.  A portion of Theatre Drive extending from Wise Drive to University Drive will change from the current speed of 25 miles per hour to 15 miles per hour on May 1st

Palmetto Park hosts numerous softball tournaments annually at the Bobby Richardson Baseball Complex, and in 2008 the Palmetto Tennis Center was host to eleven tennis tournaments and more than 30,000 local players who enjoyed the daily play.  Based on these numbers, it is obvious that Theatre Drive is utilized by the park facilities, and is also a well traveled road for students attending USC Sumter and Central Carolina Technical College, as well as other citizens.  So, if you are one of these travelers, please take note of the speed limit change that will take effect on May 1st, 2009.
